Elizabeth Brockway m. James Kendall 1816 Shaftesbury

Hi all,

I am currently trying to trace back from Elizabeth Brockway, my husband's 4x great-grandmother. She married James Kendall in Shaftesbury St Peter in 1816.

James Kendall was born in 1798, so I imagine Elizabeth would be of a similar age. On the Dorset OPC site there are two Elizabeth Brockways, baptised within months of each other; one is the daughter of Phillip Brockway, the other the daughter of Thomas.

James and Elizabeth were married by banns, where there is no record of her father. Is there any way I can determine who her father was, or have I hit a stumbling block?

Any guidance you can offer me would be greatly appreciated!

Did she have a son called Phillip (or Thomas)

Phillip especially might lean towards that one but wouldn't be conclusive

A witness at her marriage was a Fanny Brockway;  mother, sister, cousin?

A Fanny Brockway, daughter of Philip, was baptised in 1790 at Holy Trinity, Shaftesbury.

Have you found Elizabeth on any census records?  Does she give a birthplace?

Unfortunately it looks as though she died in 1840, so no census returns. I think her widower remarried, to another Eliza/Elizabeth.

The Fanny Brockway connection makes Phillip being her father more likely, and she does name one of her sons Phillip as well.

I think you will find your answers in the family history on Brockway I commissioned. I am interested now in Emily Brockway who has a rich persons grave (third cross out from Swallowcliffe church porch)
