DNA Tests For Family Historians

Do you know which parts of the genetic material and its inherited variations can be tested?  Or what commercial products are available and how should the results be interpreted?  What do they tell the family historian about their ancestry discovered from genealogical sources?  Are we likely to be related to others with the same surname even if there is no documentary evidence? Geoff Swinfield will tell us what we can (and can’t) infer and discover from these tests.
