Wilhelmina Ray
« on: Sunday 24 April 16 11:34 BST (UK) »
Hi folks,  Am back doing some more research on the women Doctors and nurse that served in the SWH during ww1.  Am looking for a wee bit more information on Wilhelmina. I have her as coming from Dundee in 1886. Her father was a Charles Ray, a prominent  figure in the city(according to a newspaper cutting). I also know she worked in London. I just don't know what became of her after 1916.

Any help on this one is as always much appreciated.

Alan

Hi Alan,

Don't know if this helps but there is a a record for Miss W Ray, Nursing Sister, born 1885 / 1886, aboard the Andorinha (Yeoward Line).  1st class round trip, Liverpool – Las Palmas, Canary Islands, departing Liverpool 31 Aug 1926, returning 16 Sep 1926.  Her home address is given as “Rose Mount” 11 Winn Road, Southampton.

Curiously, her age was recorded as 41 outward bound & 40 on return!  Bearing that in mind, could this death record be her?

Deaths Sep 1926
Ray, Wilhelmina, 39, Liverpool 8b 222

That death in Liverpool could be  Wilhelmina Williams married to a James Ray

Ah, I can see now, that marriage was in 1913, Liverpool.

Looking at the birth cert, Wilhelmina was born 13 May 1885 at 26 Mid Street, Dundee to parents Charles Ray, machine fitter and Margaret Craig who were married 29 Dec 1881 at South Shields

May be another coincidence but this record looks possible:

RAY, Wilhelmina
Birth 13 May1884
Died Mar-April-May1971
Hounslow, Essex 5c 1361

Sorry, not Essex but Greater London

Just to add: A search for Ray, Wilhelmina brings up this pdf:
GAZETTE, 12TH I» o - The Gazette
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/45230/page/12492/data.pdf

Clearly it’s the same person, but how strange her death wasn’t registered until ~ May 1971 although she died 12 Sep 1970.
