Rosinish - such wise words and I was hoping there may be a paper trail, but probably not. I did not realise that the name of Catto was such a common name over there. Perhaps way back before a paper trail they may have been kin but nothing tangible.

Have checked my local telephone book here in NZ and not a single Catto -  just the usual Smith, Jones and Brown,

Robin - aka King William
Wiltshire, Somerset, Gloucestershire - Busshe/Bushe/Bush, Le Strange/Strange, Whittington, Gunning, Browning, Maltravers
Shropshire - le Strange
Wales - Daylwyn or Deulwyn, Rede, Wirriott,
East Sussex - Catt, Ashdown, Barham, Henley, Hepden, Elliott, Phillips
London - Bush, King, Millis, Jarvis, Mellis(s)
Suffolk - Sewell, Baxter, Martin
Norfolk  - Sewell, Larter, Howlett
Tasmania, Australia - Bossward, Wellman
Worcestershire - Beach
Wales, Bristol, Bermondsey - Maurice, Cromwell, Riley

Hello, My Great Grandmother was the daughter of Thomas Catto and Mary Catto (Nee Bruce) Barbara Ann Catto who married Louis Halladay Milne 1915 at New Deer.
Louis passed in 1969, Barbara passed in 1979, they are buried at Culsh Cemetery.
My Father is the son of Louis and Barbara's daughter Nora Ann Milne.

Thanks GR2 for that stone - " New Deer: Erected by William and Margaret Catto " - full of information - if only to tell me that's not my Gavin born 1828, as my one's first born child was in 1838

It was this William (1800-1867) whose mother was 'Taylor'.
AND
The Gavin Catto who died 1884 aged 79 at Monquhitter also had mother 'Taylor'
???????????

So my Gavin may be the one born 01/09/1804 at Oldmeldrum
[ My one's children includes Rev John Catto ]

ps beware of Isobel/Isabel, Catto/Cato, Middler/Medlar and Durward/Durret

I have a feeling that I posted this info several years ago .......
In the 1960s a Walter Catto from the Aberdeenshire area bought the Ardchoille Hotel in the Hayocks area of Stevenston, Ayrshire and then purchased the Maple Leaf Hotel in Canal Street, Saltcoats, Ayrshire ( although it may have had another name and Walter renamed it because he had a Canadian connection ).  I did some Poster & Promotional work for him around 1966.  His son Tommy was in the same class as one of my younger brothers at Ardrossan Academy ( Ayrshire ) so would be now aged 70.
It subsequently became a Nursing Home under new owners, but is just now being totally renovated - but I know not what as - watch this space, I drive past it regularly.
cheers, Ian

Many years later (6)!...

I was influenced to do DNA by another RC member & would now recommend it!

There does become a time for some of us where the paper trail ends on 'ordinary' folk but for people of/with status it's a bit different, there's usually a paper trail, not always easily accessible but can be accessed by Genealogists (local to Edinburgh) at a fair price.

How far back have you reached with your paper trail & what info. can you provide to help further?
