McKay and Macdonald married in shetland then ????
« on: Monday 25 April 16 22:18 BST (UK) »
Hi....could anyone help me please.
Looking for info on these ancestors and have hit a brick wall.
My 3rd G grandparents were Roderick McKay 23/4/1862 (Lochs lewis) married Jessie MacDonald ?1863
They married in Uyeasound Unst on 26/8/1886 but i cant find anything else..
I cant find anything for Jessie and looking for death of Roderick..
I know jessies parents were Alexander MacDonald and Mary Ann MacDonald but dont know much more....I think Roderick and Jessie may have moved to Glasgow at some point.
Any help would be much appreciated...i have looked on Scotland people but no luck..
cheers in advanced...

Hi Jackie,

Have you found Roderick & Jessie/Janet/Jane on any census records to narrow things down?

Where/when did you last see them on a census & were they deceased on any of their children's marriage certs?

You can narrow down their death window with kids marriages.

As Carole mentioned too, places of birth for children are pointers for possible locations of deaths.

Hi thanks for reply haha not at all anne its always good to get your help  :)
I have been stuck on both sides in uist for what seams like forever...still not solved the currie line yet...so i thought i would look at female line..

Hi caroleW...im afraid i dont have much info yet but what i do know is that my gran was called margaret macdonald (jessie) 1925-1989 born in daliburgh S,uist to Alexander MacDonald and marion mckay. Alexander and Marion married in oban 28/8/1923 and marraige certificate gives marions parents as Roderick mckay and jessie macdonald.( Roderick deceased at time of marrage)...Jessie and roderick married in 1886 whilst both living in Uyeasound shetland .
I dont know if marion had siblings and i cant find her birth cert or census...A few other certificates gives jessie with maiden name also mckay....
So confusing !!.
any help is much appricated and advice always welcome...
I have a family tree diagram  from the hebridespeople which am sure is my line however it stops with roderick and jessie and shows they may have moved to glasgow.
Rodericks parents i think were Isaballa mckay ( parents Roderick mckay and catherine mcsween) and Duncan mckay (parents norman mckay and ann mcleod). Rodericks siblings could be ....Findley annabella, catherine, norman.
Hope this helps, sorry dont have more but il keep looking and try and peice together,
thanks again to you both. x

Hi Jackie

The 1923 shows Marion as Morag. Did she go by both names?

www.whatsinaname.net/female-names/Sarah.html Morag is a variant with Marion and Sarah...

There's a good chance that marion was known as morag. It seams that many names are changed along the way... Just wondered if Jessie could have been Margaret and thats why im not finding anything..
I wonder if Jessie husband Roderick had died before 1901 if census only shows the two of them.
On Jessie marriage cert it gives her age as 23 (1886) so she would have been 38 in 1901...although there seams to always be a variance on ages.

There is a Jessie McKay (maiden name McInnes) that I have just found in 1891 with a daughter Marion born late 1880s so not sure now on that possible 1901 census entry above with mother and Daughter in S Uist  :-\
