JOHN FRANCIS MULHERN
« on: Tuesday 26 April 16 04:12 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for more information on a Mulhern family that lived in Bellmullet, Mayo a son John Francis Mulhern born 20 Oct 1903 immigrated to Rhode Island and his son John Francis Mulhern Jr died 13 April 2015 and his son who is a friend has very little information on his father's family after the grandfather John Francis Mulhern came over here in 1924. I have a civil registration, but would like to find a baptism record so I can get the parents names and hopefully start looking for siblings of the grandfather to see if any of them came to Rhode Island as well. Any help you can provide will be appreciated!

Maria

I can see a potentially good match, but born about 80 miles east of Belmullet in County Roscommon.

The US indexes to naturalization records show a John Francis Mulhern living in Providence R.I., born October 20 1903 in "Roscommon County", Ireland.

A John Francis Mulhern was baptised on 1 November 1903 to parents Patrick Mulhern and Mary Drury in Boyle RC parish County Roscommon, the address was Garrow and the record indicates that the date of birth could have been October 20 1903 and goes on to say that John Francis married Mary Catherine Toolin in Holy Home Church, Providence R.I.

That would fit with this family in the 1911 Ireland census:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Roscommon/Boyle_Rural/Garrow/778650/

In addition to the children shown in the 1911 census - John (Francis), James,  Mary Anne, (Joseph) Patrick and Kate - they also had the following children in Garrow:

- George baptised 1912;
- Twins Joseph and Margaret J. baptised 1914;
- Thomas baptised 1916.

Some of the records are annotated to indicate marriages in Ireland.

Pat Mulhern married Maria Drury on 9 November 1902, detail is below should you wish to order a research copy of the marriage from Roscommon GRO (should provide fathers names and occupations):

In the absence of knowing the father's details from the 1902 marriage record and notwithstanding the looseness over age in the following (not untypical for the time), I would have thought this is a possibility for Pat Mulhern and his father in the 1901 census (note sister's name, compared to the 1911 census):
