Buried in unconsecrated ground thatcham?
« on: Tuesday 26 April 16 21:53 BST (UK) »
On the berkshire burial index on find my past, my gt grans brother was buried in Thatcham cemetery. On the Notes section of the record, is says died 31 oct - buried in unconsecrated ground.
Is there such a section of thatcham cemetery for maybe non believers? Why would someone be buried in unconsecrated ground? Seemed important enough to write that on the notes.

The first thing that comes to mind is suicide.

Hi, could she have been a catholic buried in a protestant churchyard, or an Anglican or some faith which was not the same as the church where she was buried.

Frank.

Or he may not have been baptised.

If this is a municipal cemetery rather than one attached to a church, then there is most probably a section for those who aren't of the Anglican or a Christian faith, such as Jewish or Muslim people

When was he buried?

Thatcham church gaveyard closed in 1887, the new cemetery  opened in 1887 but was not consecrated until 1888.

Can't remember off hand but think it was in the 1930s. Will check my records tomorrow

All municipal cemeteries I have come across have consecrated and unconsecrated sections - the first for CofE and, perhaps RC, the latter for everyone else. Most nonconformist sects would view ground consecrated by a CofE minister as tainted - especially Quakers.  So the odds are that your burial was of a Baptist, Congregationalist or Methodist.

That rules out the possibility that he was buried before the site was consecrated.
I would have thought there would be family knowledge if he followed a religion other than Christianity.
So whose decision was it about where he was buried? - Did an established  church refuse to bury him in consecrated ground (was he excommunicated, nonconformist,  an atheist or a suicide?) - or was he an atheist and it was his wish?

You may have to order the death certificate to check one of the options.
