Walter McLaren - Shipmaster/Owner Tulliallan 1822-1831
« on: Tuesday 26 April 16 22:32 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to find out info on Walter McLaren who was a shipowner/master in Tulliallan.
I know he was married to Elizabeth Drummond and died at sea on 19 July 1831, I would
like to know what ships he owned and if any sailed to Australia & New Zealand. His son also
named Walter was also a shipmaster and sailed on the 'Queen of Kincardine' in 1846 to Marseilles, France. He died on 25 Feb 1850 in Cork, Ireland.

Some of my ancestors immigrated to New Zealand (Otago) from 1871, and were related by marriage to the McLaren's I think that's why I can't find them on any passenger lists.

Can anyone help ?

Thanks,

Daryl

Tulliallan is in Kincardine in Fife [now] it may have been Clackmannanshire in 1831 but definitely not Kincardineshire

Hi Daryl,

Is it possible to supply your references to Walter being Shipmaster/Owner in that period as it may help others to search deeper?

Annie

Hi Monica,

Yes, that's the Walter & family I am related too (Walter's son David b.10 Jan 1829 d.16 Feb 1917 in Tulliallan, was married to Isabella Stewart Gillespie b. 14 Mar 1835 d. 20 Nov 1906 in Kincardine who was my ancestor. Her brother Lawrence Gillespie immigrated to Australia when he was very young (between 1851-61) i.e. 7-17 yrs old so I think he sailed on one the ships which belonged to the McLaren family. The rest of his family, his parents David & Eliza neč Scotland immigrated after Apr 1871, as they disappear and emerge in 1880 in Otago. He was a Carter by trade.

I thought if I found the name of the ship owned by the McLaren family, I could try finding it in NZ shipping arrivals.

I'm afraid I don't know when Walter snr was born, but he was a shipowner by 1822.
I found this on Rootsweb Perthshire- L archives dated May 2003, by Margaret O'Donnell.

Below is a list of Feuars and Inhabitants of Kincardine On Forth and
Tulliallan - (156 Names and Occupations.)
Tulliallan Parish No: 397 ( Formally in Perthshire now in Fife) - Who are
named on a Contract and Agreement with Lord Keith proprietor of the Estates
of Kincardine and Tulliallan, following a dispute over Water rights to the
village from the estate and Dated the 29th January 1822.

> WALTER McLAREN - Shipowner.
