Family story is that James Howard WINTERBOTTOM (JHW), a farmer of Saddleworth, Yorkshire, England, born 1876, sailed to Canada in 1908 and farmed there before returning to England sometime before 1916.
FACTS.
JHW was in Saddleworth for the 1911 census (April 2nd) with his wife Alma and three daughters.
JHW sailed alone to New York from Liverpool on 10/11 April 1911, bound for Fall River, Massachusetts, according to the passenger manifest of SS Carmania.
JHW's 4th child, Harold, was born on 27th February 1916 so, counting back, JHW had to be back in Saddleworth by April/May 1915.  (There is no reason to doubt that he was Harold's father.)

QUESTIONS.
When did JHW return, from where, to where & on which ship?  Did he return from USA or from CANADA, where family story says he went?
Why did he head for Fall River.  No known family had emigrated there.

Any help or advice would be very welcome!

There is an outgoing passenger record for a James H Winterbottom travelling from Liverpool to Boston 2.8.1907.  However - the actual manifest shows 2 entries - James J and James (looks like) snr Winterbottom.  No ages and no other identification.  The occupations do not look like farmer

The James snr has been transcribed as James M

According to the ships manifest he was going to his nephew Charles Buckley(?) in Fall River.

He's listed on line one.

Very many thanks, RJ137!  I had found page one in a very hurried search in a local library, but did not see page two at all!  So you have solved the important question of "Why", now I am trying to discover when he returned!

I tried to send a reply but it says I am not allowed to send personal messages.

My interest is that my partner is James' Great Grandaughter.
