HELP Finding Walter Smith b 1893 Birstall, Batley

Can anyone suggest how I can follow this further.

My great grandfather Walter Smith was born 3 November 1893 to Thomas Dixon Smith and Elizabeth (nee Robinson).

On the 1901 the family are living at Law Street, Birstall, West Yorks.

In 1915 he married Clara Porritt and in November 1915 my grandmother Lillian was born.

Walter went away to serve in WW1 (Army Ordanance Corps number 025537). He survived the war but did not return to Clara.  Clara did not remarry (although she did have more children) and died in 1962. Her death is registered as Clara Smith.

What happened to Walter?? An old friend on my grans believes he ended up in Lincolnshire and that he had a son.

When my gran married in 1938 her father is shown with occupation as chauffeur.  When she remarried in 1975 he is shown as a grocer. He husbands father is named but it says deceased in brackets which would possibly suggest Walter was still alive in 1975.

Any help or pointers appreciated.

Has the 1939 register been checked ? It would give his birthdate and other members of the household.

Hi all don't know if this means anything but there is an immigration record 6/5/1921 going to Quebec for a Walter Smith age 29 occupation driver and a Jeannie Smith age 39 ,Walter Smith age 2....Their names are crossed out so I think that means they did not go I'm sure some of the others will know
