Catholics must show proof of baptism to marry and it has become practice to record on a baptismal record that the person married, to whom and where.
It was not widespread until the late 1800s and is as far as I am aware mandatory now.

For a Catholic to marry he/she must provide a letter of freedom from every parish that they resided in, references to these are sometimes made.

The efficiency of the priest also comes to mind!  ;)

In the 1950s in the UK you can find a marriage record will state where the person originated from and where they were baptised.  Even the former information would give you a specific church in Ireland to contact for information. Much of this type of researching is accepting that most answers won't be in your favour but the ones that are, are precious!

Thanks to the excellent advice from "myluck!", I now have more information from the very helpful lady at St Anselm's, the church where Owen CONNOLLY married Kathleen McNALLY.
Owen Eugene CONNOLLY was born 9th March 1934 in Virginia, Co. Cavan, to Owen CONNOLLY & Mary (Anne) McELGUNN.  Owen was baptised in Virginia, but the church where he was married did not have a copy of the baptism.  He was confirmed in Castlerahan in 1943 and the telegram which informed St Anselm’s that Owen CONNOLLY was “Free to Marry”, came from Father Terence BRADY, but we do not know which church.  Possibly Castlerahan?  Owen came to England in 1955.
The hunt now seems to switch to finding any siblings for Owen Eugene CONNOLLY in the hope that they might have had children who might know the whereabouts of the grave of their uncle Owen!
Any suggestions?
