I had found a record with Martin Shipley, I knew there was nothing to go on unfortunately.

Thinking cap on for now until I can visit or order documents

I think John and Elizabeth separated between 1861 and 1871

She is on one 1871 census as head, with children, and he is on another 1871 census with son George plus a servant  ???

I have received Abraham Pickering's birth certificate.
I am still trying to figure out his mother's maiden name, I think it looks like Swinney but I've tried searching and there's no records  ???

Does anyone else see the same surname?

I agree on SWINNEY.

It doesn't mean that that's the best version of the surname to hunt for though. Unless the mother actually signed, it's just what the Registrar THOUGHT he heard.

You should see some of the variants and deviants in MY records!
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.

This is the first one to have me at a loss.
Her marriage record is listed as Swinhow, but I haven't seen a hand written version of it.

Swinney could also have been mid spelt or spelt differently through the years, I think this may take a long time

I don't know if this helps but there was a Mary Swinney married Nicholas Soulsby on 15th July 1843 at All Saints, Newcastle Upon Tyne, her father was Abrahamn Swinney.
Same father maybe!!

On 1841 census, there are Mary and Elizabeth Swinney together aged 15 and 12 respectively so seem too young, but could be erroneous rounding. They seem to be in household of Cath Ball and family in Monkwearmouth.
