Marriage at Parr Mount Holy Trinity, St Helens 1872
« on: Monday 02 May 16 14:04 BST (UK) »
Hi, I wonder if anyone has access to the marriage entry.  I know that a Mary Ellen Ashcroft married William Owen on 6 August 1872 at Parr Mount.

I've lost track of my 3rd Great Aunt Mary Ashcroft (c1856) who I last see in the 1871 E&W census living in Windle, St Helens with her mum Alice and step dad William Rigby (RG10; Piece: 3863; Folio: 46; Page: 17).  I can't find her in the 1881 census and there are no obvious deaths.  There is a Mary Ellen and William Owen in the 1881 census (RG11; Piece: 3757; Folio: 19; Page: 31) he is aged 26 and she is 25 and they are recorded as having children aged 8, 6 & 2, so would have been 16 or 17 when they married.

All help appreciated.

Hi Kit,

Don't know if this complicates matters or not, but on Lancs OPC I have come across the following marriage:

3rd March 1873, Christ Church Eccleston, Lancs.

Patrick Cooney, x, Full Age, Collier, Bachelor, Eccelston
Mary Ashcroft, x, Full Age, Spinster, Eccleston

Groom's Father: Thomas Cooney, Labourer
Bride's Father: William Rigby, Labourer

Witnesses: Thomas Kay, Margearet Kay, (x)

Married by Banns.

I couldn't see the Ashcroft/Owen marriage in Parr Mount on there unfortunately.

Hope this helps anyway.

Kind regards

Hi,

As per my first reply, I think that this is Mary's marriage, the 1871 census gives William Rigby's occupation as Labourer here: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VBFK-B3N , which matches up.

I wonder whether this is them in 1881 here: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKXX-N1YY

I know that it gives Mary's place of birth as Liverpool, but perhaps the enumerator dittoed the birth place above instead of entering her birth place properly when copying across from the household schedule to the enumerators book. Other problem though is that Patrick's occupation has changed from Collier on marriage record to Dock Labourer on this 1881 census. I cannot see another couple that fits though. :-\

Hope this helps anyway.

Kind regards

David

Hi, thanks David and Keyboard86
I know that Mary was the youngest of 3 children (Esther, James, Mary) born to single mother, Alice Ashcroft.  Alice married William Rigby 8 April 1871 at Rainford Parish Church.  James is my 2nd GGF.

In the 1861 census Alice and children are shown together and William Rigby is their boarder
(RG 9; Piece: 2747; Folio: 43; Page: 25)

I've no idea whether William Rigby was father to any of the children (James certainly has no father named on his marriage certificate) but it may be that Mary married using William as such.  Thanks so much for finding that marriage record for me David, although when it says 'Full Age' wasn't that 21?  Mary would only have been 17? (b 1856).  I will explore the Cooney angle too and look at all the links/suggestions.

Keyboard - the record showing James and Ellen Appleton is interesting in that my 2nd GGF James married Caroline Appleton, but that wasn't until 1873 and their story is very sad both succumbing  to TB when their 3 daughters were quite young.

Much appreciated. Keep those suggestions coming!  :)

Just to perhaps complicate things even further this is for ref James marriage

Marriage: 10 Mar 1873 St Thomas, Eccleston, Lancashire, England
James Ashcroft - (X), 19, Collier, Bachelor, Eccleston
Caroline Appleton - 17, Spinster, Eccleston
    Groom's Mother: Alice Ashcroft
    Bride's Father: William Appleton, Collier
    Witness: Daniel Stanley; Mary Tomlinson

His mother is described as Alice Ashcroft not Rigby which she would have been in 1873 if she married in 1871

Mary Alice Conny   6

living in Eccleston, Mary born St Helens

1891 - still in Windle

Name   Age
Patrick Cooney   48

Mary A Cooney   17
William Cooney   18

possible death
Deaths Dec 1896   (>99%)
Cooney    Patrick    49    Prescot    8b   515
