James Brand Smith & Elizabeth Rule
« on: Wednesday 04 May 16 07:55 BST (UK) »
Hi just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how I can find a better set of records for immigration from Uk to New Zealand in 1954/55, I have looked at a few but no luck.

I'm searching for Elizabeth Rule, born around 1920, who married James Brand Smith in Scotland in 1952 then immigrated to New Zealand about 1954/55. She was a dressmaker in the UK and he is listed as a Driver in Nz.

I have found them on the Nz census from 1963-78 in Wellington. We haven't been able to find any other records other than their marriage in 1952. Apparently they later had a son, we are trying to find any living relatives.

Thanks in advance

Your facts are slightly off, I'm afraid.

I've found her, apparently travelling alone, shown as:

Mrs. Elizabeth Smith - birthdate 2/4/1926 - UK address 49 Park Avenue, Laucieston, Falkirk, Stirlingshire, occupation Sewer.   Left London for Auckland on 8/6/1956 on the ship Rangitiki.

I can't however, find a likely entry for husband James - according to SP births he was born 1927 Falkirk.  Looks as if he must have travelled before her.   Perhaps he flew there and she followed later by ship.

Mrs. Elizabeth Smith - birthdate 2/4/1926
I take it that is 2 April (UK style) not 4 February (US style)

Laucieston, Falkirk
Laurieston?

8/6/1956 on the ship Rangitiki
Presumably 8 June rather than 6 August?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

That's great thank you so much, yes that's definitely her as I recognise the laurieston address. Interesting! Like you said perhaps he flew and she didn't like planes :)

I know he somehow ended up in new Zealand. As they are listed as living at the same address during the 1963 census and onward. Even so far as having his full name,  James Brand Smith and her name listed as Elizabeth Rule Smith. ...  Just can't seem to find out how he got there!  Maybe he was a stow away lol  :o

Hi there,

May I please ask where you have found the New Zealand Census records, particularly the 1963 census and onward....  My Auckland cousins would be delighted to have access to their own records.

Archives NZ "The New Zealand Census was not historically kept by the New Zealand Government. Only a select few early regional and Māori census records have survived"
http://archives.govt.nz/research/questions-answers-general-lists

Here's the online link to NZ BDM index.
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/
James Brand SMITH death registered 2005.
Elizabeth Rule SMITH death registered 2015.

ADD do you have the NZ printouts?  I understand that the NZ death registrations are quite detailed, similar depth to say Queensland BDM records, so the name and address of the informant will be noted.   Perhaps Elizabeth's printout will have a current address?

Cheers,  JM
