Jane Cockin (a witness) to a July 1815 Selby Marriage, who was she?
« on: Wednesday 04 May 16 14:28 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

Any suggestions, as to who Jane Cockin (witness) was, to the George HOOD = Sarah RUSSEL (Spinster & born Selby) marriage in July 1815 at Selby?

Jane Cockin is not listed (& neither is George, another mystery) in the Selby Parish Register transcriptions up to 1812, so where might Jane Cockin be from, please?

Thanks
Kind regards Mark

Don't know if this newspaper transcript (below) is any help (found by Eilleen).

I've also found some Cockin's linked to the following places:-

A George Cockin of Sandholme, in the Parish of Eastrington, sold the property in 1824 and moved to Clementhorpe.
Huddersfield.
Leeds & Hull Missionary Meetings in Hull Packet of 17 August 1813 involving a Mr Cockin, Joseph Cockin and Rev. John Cockin.
Haifax.
Luddington in Lincolnshire.

Hull Daily Mail of 9th April 1908

FOCKERBY.
DEATH.- By the death of Mr William Cockin
at the advanced age of 79 Fockerby loses one of
its most familiar figures. Mr Cockin is the last
of that name residing in the village, the family
living on the same homestead for upwards of 100
years.
The deceased was a considerable pro-
perty owner, having property in Garthorpe,
Eastoft, Luddington and Adlingfleet. His wife
having pre-deceased him, and having no child-
ren, the nearest relatives to mourn his loss are
nieces and nephews. The funeral took place at
Adlingfleet, and was conducted by the Rev. A. T.
Ryan, assisted by Captain Cunliffe, C.A.

EDIT: I have also found out a GRO Birth Certificate for a later (obviously much too late for 1815), but it might help tracing backward ...

Registration District SELBY
BIRTH in the Sub-district of SNAITH
16th September 1837 for Jane;
William Cockin Father Labourer, Cowick;
Mother Ann Cockin formerly Robinson

Any suggestions of a Jane Cockin existing in 1815 and old enough to sign as a Witness, please?

Hello Frank and All

I'm afraid George Hood (aged 28) who married at Selby in July 1815 and died Selby in Sept 1845 (but no known burial) and Jane Cockin their witness at the 1815 Marriage are one of our family's greatest mysteries!

See my 2 earlier posts.

Kind regards Mark

Hi Mark, yes I know about your George Hood mystery, I've been following it over the past weeks, I was even in a church yard in Carlton, not far from Selby looking for the grave of an ancestor last weekend and found myself looking for Hoods,(That's genealogy for you  ;) ) good luck with your quest.

Regards always

Frank :)

Hello Frank, thanks for looking for a Hood headstone.

Looking or trying for Jane Cockin, now and old enough to sign as a Marriage Witness in 1815, she is just as mysterious, but if traced, might give me a lead.

Thanks Mark

Hello All

Adding this in the hope, that perhaps in the future other searchers of the Cockin name will find this thread and will perhaps, have come across a Jane Cockin, who fits the bill.

1814 George Cockin of Sandholme in the Parish of Eastrington County of York Farmer purchases an Estate at Clementhorpe and Staddlethorpe in the Parish of Blacktoft.

In the property document, his wife is Mary, George Cockin = Mary

1824 ... late George Cockin of Sandholme aforesaid, but then of Clementhorpe Farmer ...

It seems a Jno Pierson of Howden (also John Pearson) is mentioned with George Cockin, Farmer, in the document.

Come across some Pearsons (both spellings) as Witnesses in unrelated East Riding Hood Wills. A Coincidence perhaps.

Regards Mark

Alternative spellings for Cockin: Cocking, Cockyn, Cockayn(e).
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

Alternative spellings for Cockin: Cocking, Cockyn, Cockayn(e).

Thanks, for the variations.

I have started collecting notes re the surname:- Cockin's at:-
Doncaster;
Fishlake;
Huddersfield;
Holmfirth;
Halifax;
Landholme in the Parish of Eastrington;
COWICK/Selby Birth in the Sub-district of Snaith (16 Sep 1837 Jane Cockin dau of Wm Cockin of Cowick and Ann Cockin, nee Robinson);
Clementhorpe and Staddlethorpe in the Parish of Blacktoft;
Fockerby,
Luddington, Lincs,
(having property in Garthorpe, Eastoft, Luddington and Adlingfleet).

Only one other Jane Cockin found, who would likely be too old by 1815 - doubtful.

Seems, in 1837 a William Cockin, Labourer, (local to Selby), at Cowick.

Although, the Witness signatures in the 1815 George Hood, Marriage Register entry at Selby are in the same hand as the entry, there is no reference to the 'mark of', so it seems Jane Cockin could sign her name.

Kind regards Mark
