Parish of Castleton
« on: Wednesday 20 July 05 13:24 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone out there is doing research on families in the parish of Castleton.  I have been researching a number of branches of my family there (mostly Elliots) but have hit a few brickwalls.  If anyone else is having the same problems, I would be glad to help and share info that I have - 2 heads (or more) have got to be better than 1   :)

Cheers,
Clare

I visited both Cemeteries at Castleton last month; there were many Elliots and Croziers buried there. I would recommend a visit there.

Hi there,

I have been down a couple of times and have a copy of the Liddesdale monumental inscriptions that have helped a lot.  However, I have hit a brick wall with one of my Elliots as he was illegitimate and tracking down his father is proving to be a problem!  :)

Cheers,
Clare

Hi Clare

Have you tried looking on the Rootsweb mailing list for Roxburgh. I know John Murray has been compiling a huge database of info on Castleton families and Elliots in particular - he may have info that could help you with your brickwalls.

Hi there,

John and I have email 'chatted' a few times about my family, but we haven't been able to go further back on my line than I am just now.  I am hoping that his work on Elliot burials will help, but haven't had a chance to speak to him about that for a while.

I notice that you have Elliots in your signature - which branch are you researching?

Cheers,
Clare

Hi again Clare

My only  Elliot so far is my 4xgreat grandmother Janet, b 1750 in Cavers,d 1830 and buried in Castleton. Janet was apparently the daughter of a William Elliot - she married James Riddell, who I believe was also from the Cavers area. Other than that info, I haven't really started on that arm of the tree yet - too many ancestors, too little time  ;D

Regards
Pam

Hi Pam,

You have got back much further than I have!  I am stuck around the start of the 19th century with William Elliot born in 1810.  I really need to get back into New Register House and have a serious look at the OPRs.

I have the 1851 census for Castleton and Hawick and the Liddesdale Monumental Inscriptions if you ever need a look up of those.

Cheers,
Clare

In my family I have Donald Forsyth (born 3 Feb 1826 - Avoch) who married (Janet Elliot (20 May 1838 - Castleton).  They married 16 Jan 1856.

I believe her parents were Gideon Elliot and Agnes Aderson and further informaation would be great.

Hi Sue,

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you.  I have done some digging and found the following...

In Castleton Churchyard, there is a stone with the following inscription:
"In memory of Donald Forsyth who dies at Bridge End Newcastleton 1902 aged 70 years.  Also Janet Elliot wife of the above who dies at Newcastleton January 25th 1922 aged 84 years"

That would give you some more leeway on Donald's date of birth - circa 1832.  I am also interested in how someone born in Avoch ended up in Castleton - it is a long way to travel.

I also checked the 1851 census and did not find any mention of a Gideon Elliot in either Castleton or Hawick.  I did find one Janet Elliot aged 12 in the 1851 census for Castleton, but not sure if it is the correct one, as no parents are listed...

Dykecrofts
Helen Elliot, Daughter, Unmarried, 22, Farm Servant, Roxburgh Castleton
Mary Elliot, daughter, Unmarried, 20, Farm Servant, Roxburgh Castleton
janet Elliot, Daughter, Unmarried, 12, Farm Servant, Roxburgh Castleton
Robert Turnbull, Grandson, 12, Roxburgh Castleton
Agness Anderson, Granddaughter, 1, Roxburgh Castleton.

Unfortunately, there is no head of household given - so we are kind of drawing a blank there.

However, I did a quick search on the IGI at familysearch.org, and there are births of a Helen Elliot and Mary Elliot to Gideon Elliot and Agnes (or Nancy) Anderson at around the correct times - so it might be the correct family.

Sorry it is not better information - but it might help you on a little bit.

Cheers,
Clare
