Does anyone know where "The Steamer" Public House, which was number 16 cheap street, was located? Can't see a number 16 on google earth, although I see modern buildings on one side of the street. maybe it was there?

If you mean Cheap Street Newbury, then you can see Number 16 on this map https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/447259/166888/13/100765 What year are you refering to? There is a Weavers Arms there on the 1880 Town Plan https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/447259/166888/13/100070

Looking at the 1881 census, the "Railway Steamer" was at 16 and the "Weavers Arms" was at 17.

Thankyou. Looks quite small to have been a pub. Glad to see it still stands though!

The Steamer or Railway Steamer was next door to the Weavers' Arms - the former being a beerhouse that opened arund 1850, the latter a fully licensed lodging house dating back to the C17th or earlier. The Steamer was closed around 1908 and the premises became a fish and chip shop. The Weavers' closed in the 1930s and became for many years the restaurant side of the chippy. Fairly recently the restaurant closed and the two old pubs are now separate businesses again.

Just to Clarify, On google street view, The Plaice was The Steamer, which was a beerhouse and The Swan Upholstery Supplies was the weavers arms, a lodging house?
