St Saviour tombstones - COOMBE 1872, SIMON 1885
« on: Tuesday 10 May 16 04:03 BST (UK) »
I am hoping someone may be able to  transcribe two gravestones in St Saviour churchyard/cemetery.  They are both located on the same plot and I have found a photograph on the internet but cant read the inscriptions - www.ipernity.com/doc/rgphotography/30219161.  One of the gravestones is an enormous boulder with an arched panel smoothed out of one side, and the other at right angles to the boulder is an upright dressed reddish stone with a pointed top.

1. Charles William COOMBE, late Captain of H.M. 73 Regt, and his widow Tamzen.  Charles died between 1871 and 1881, and Tamzen sometime after 1881 at Longueville Manor.

2. Thomas SIMON, H.M. Receiver General for Jersey, died 21 Nov 1885 at Longueville Manor.  His wife Amelia Winter Simon (daughter of Tamzen) died 30 Mar 1891 and may be also recorded on this stone.

Any assistance much appreciated.

I live a 2 min walk away from St Saviour's church - I'll pop round when it stops raining, they don't look as if they'll be too hard to find. I can always have a work with the sexton, he's usually pretty helpful.

As you can imagine it wasn't difficult to spot such a monster lump of granite. So, on the granite,
"Charles William Combe, late Captain of HM 73rd Regt Born at Tortola, West Indies 7th November 1808
Died at Richlieu, Bagot 15th January 1872

Tamzen, his widow
Born at Ardram, Ireland 24th December 1817
Died at Longueville Manor 23rd January 1888

On the stone with the pointed top
Thomas Simon HM Receiver General Born at St Helier 13th November 1832
Died at Longueville Manor 21st November 1885

Also of Amelia Winter Anderson
widow of Charles Venables and of the above Thomas Simon
Died at Longueville Manor 30th March 1891 Aged 52 years.

Amelia's grandson, Stephen John Venables (1909-1988) and his wife Nancy Joyce Benest (1913-2012) are to the right of the boulder and there is a plaque on the right hand side of the boulder commemorating Jane Lovelady, (1868-1930)  wife of Charles Venables (Amelia's son)
