west riding discharge papers pre WW1
« on: Wednesday 20 July 05 16:09 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,

Trying this from another angle.

My grandfather was born in Bradford Leeds 1884.

Married,1906 in Leeds and was in the Royal Field Artillery.

Had 3 kids between 1905 and 1910.

Discharged from the Army about 1912 then immigrated to Australia.

Being a Bradford lad I would think he was in the Territorial Forces and was probably part of the newly formed "2nd West Riding Brigade Foyal Field Artillery" which was formed in 1908 and the HQ was in Bradford.

I have been going through as many files as I can at TNA but just when I think I am getting somewhere....KLUNK...another door closes.LOL.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve

British Army discharge papers covering this period are at the National Archives (not online) and filed in approximate alphabetical order by name not regiment:

http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/researchguidesindex.asp?j=1

This might not help much but is there an army address on his marriage certificate?  If so (like I did) you may be able to establish exactly which btn/bty etc. was stationed there at the time.  My gt grandfather married 1905 (RFA) and next turns up in the WW1 medal rolls under his old regiment before being transferred to another one.  I have no idea what he was doing in the intervening years.

Best wishes

Casalguidi

G'day Casalguidi,

Thanks again for your help.

Is all I have is a civilian address. The only other clue I have is that the HQ for the 2nd West Riding Regiment was Valley Parade,Bradford.

He immigrated to Australia in 1912 with his 3 kids and returned to fight for the British Army in 1915/16.

I am also trying to find if he ever received a UK war pension here in Australia. He lived here until he died aged 73.

There are so many other areas of research but they do not seem to be online...eg:Royal Hospital Chelsea Soldiers Documents,Chelsea Regiment Registers 1715 to 1857,Description Books,Depot Description Books 1768 to 1908,Admissions Registers 1704 to 1922,Admission and Discharge Registers 1803 to 1923.

But they only go so far.I do have a small list of Gunners in the RFA from WW1 so one day I will have to bight the bullet and pay to look at them.LOL.

Regards

Steve
