Samuel was in gaol in 1851. In Parkhurst or possibly Millbank. He was transported in 1852. Would the census have been recorded for prisoners in gaol?
I am tempted to say this Samuel with father Robert and mother Mary is the one I am looking for but how can I be sure?

Sorry about that had a senior moment. I had taken note to look that up but due to life getting in the way of what I want to do doing such and seeing this post slipped my mind. Will do now before anything else takes me away from what I am doing.
Thank you for your help.

The Samuel Sheepwash that was convicted in 1848, but not put on the ship until 1852 was sent to Tasmania. (Ship name was Fairlie)

In the  document series "Tasmania, Reports of Crime, 1861 - 1883", he appears a couple of times as:

Samuel Challis, alias Sheepwash, arrived Fairlie, from Cheltenham (Gloucester), born about 1835, again charged with larceny, and receiving a further six years.
