Finlayson from Larbert
« on: Sunday 15 May 16 12:07 BST (UK) »
I am tracing back my wife's family tree for Finlayson who were from Larbert area. I have managed to get back to Malcolm Finlayson born around 1800 -& married Elizabeth Donaldson.
His son was Robert Finlayson born 1822 who married Ann Gray.
Robert,s son was Alexander who was the father of James Finlayson of Laurel & Hardy fame. Roberts other son was Malcolm born in 1850 who is my wife's great great grandfather.
If anybody has any info on above I would be very grateful.

Hi ,

Going by the 1841 Census transcription at http://www.freecen.org.uk/ , I think Malcolm Finlayson maybe born c1781(age 60) although this may have been rounded down.

My 4th-great-grandmother was Janet Finlayson in Larbert. Her father was James Finlayson, and Janet had an illegitimate son, Peter Hogg, born in 1794. The circumstances of Peter's arrival resulted in reams of minutes in the records of Larbert Kirk Session, and in the Sheriff Court, but none of the reams of information give any clues to the name of her mother or any siblings.

There ia a household in Larbert in the 1841 census consisting of George Finlayson, 50, grinder; Janet Finlayson, 60; James Hogg, 20, all born in Stirlingshire. Peter Hogg's eldest son James was born on 1 January 1820. So I think that 'my' Janet was born 1776/1781 and probably had a younger brother George, born 1786/1791. The given name Malcolm does not occur among the descendants of Peter Hogg.

In 1851 there is a household with Malcolm Finlayson, grinder, aged 81; daughter Janet, 51; and grandson Robert, 13, all born in Larbert, who seem to be the same family as that in the 1841 census quoted above.

Hi! Just joined this website today because of this threads post coming up on google. I have no clue how to use this. I'm the granddaughter of George Rice. His mother was Jean Finlayson and father was Ernest Rice. This means I'm related to your wife! How can we private message? I'm new to family history and very overwhelmed with websites.

You can only private message after you have made three posts to the forum.

Not surprised you are overwhelmed. Have a look at these

and for some light relief

When and where was George Rice born?
When and where were Ernest Rice and Jean Finlayson married?
When and where did Ernest Rice and Jean Finlayson or Rice die?
Where did they all live?

Ah, no wonder I couldn't find them anywhere in Great Britain.

Ah, no wonder I couldn't find them anywhere in Great Britain.

YES!! Too funny because I only found that page last night after searching this one. Great find! Those are my people!!!

My aunts and uncles came over this weekend and shared pictures and a journal from when Jean, Ernest, Agnes, Bob Knox,Robert?, and my grandfather George drove cross country to Hollywood, California to visit with James Finlayson. I know I'm very fortunate with famous "Uncle Jimmy" that more data and picture are available. Just wished I had listened to my grandparents stories more closely when they were living.

Now that I'm on day two of "who are my ancestors" haha, I have lots more dates and data to collect. Brooklyn NY seems to be where homes were.

Also learned that I was incorrect all my life thinking my grandfather, George Stanley Rice was an only child. Ernest and Jean lost a daughter, Isabella, in 1918 to possibly flu. Trying now to figure out how to get a copy of her death certificate.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR RESPONDING TO MY POST! I was so afraid no one would listen. I will follow the links you all were nice enough to share so I can learn the proper use of this amazing website. When I find more solid dates and addresses out, I'll be back to chat!
