Hamilton's of Kingston
« on: Sunday 15 May 16 12:31 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm revisiting a brick wall and wondered whether anyone can help.  I last posted about 8 years ago without much luck but am hoping with the new records available since, someone is able to help.

George Hamilton married Sarah Bellamy, sometime between 1814 (when his first wife died) and 1820 (when he died).  All the information I have is taken from his Will.  He refers to 'his children' by Sarah, but doesn't name them and also refers to when his youngest child reaches his or her 21st birthday, so I'm assuming Sarah was expecting when he wrote the will.

It also makes reference to Sarah's first husband - George Bellamy - and talks about not paying her annuity should George 'return and in any way interfere with Sarah'.

However, I cannot find a marriage record for George and Sarah, nor can I find any baptism records for any children, or any record of death for Sarah.

I have found baptism details for Hester and Eliza Hamilton, both baptised in KOT in 1818, one born 1818, one 1817 so the dates match, daughters of George Hamilton - Gardener (which matches) and Hester.  It could be that Sarah is Hester perhaps, but I cant find any further reference to any of them.

If anyone can help me knock down even a small part of this brick wall, I would be eternally grateful  :D

As divorce was unlikely at that time and Sarah was obviously not a widow if George was worried about her husband returning, then I doubt it was a legal or formal marriage, bore likely a defacto relationship.

If Sarahs Husband George was around in 1820 then George/Sarah would not have been able to Marry, correct?
