Commercial Inn, Peebles
« on: Monday 16 May 16 10:40 BST (UK) »
Hello,

There was an inn on the south side of the High Street in Peebles in the 1850's called the Commercial Inn.  I know there were a number of inns in the town at this time, but I wondering whether this hotel is still standing and which of the current hotels on the south side it is.

My gg grandfather was listed as an hostler there in the 1851 census.  At the time, the innkeeper was listed as Thomas Wallace.

Many thanks for all your help,
KESTON.

You can see the Commercial Inn on the 1856 Peebles Town Plan at http://maps.nls.uk/view/74416589 overlaps onto http://maps.nls.uk/view/74416590 The Tontine Hotel is still there Google Street View https://goo.gl/maps/yo38eDofqHB2 It looks as though the Commercial Inn is now the County Inn

I have just looked these words up - how interesting!!

Richard Burns's wife Elizabeth Johnston would have definitely been a Gutterbluid, and Richard would have been a Stoorifit, having come from Ireland.

Many thanks!  Definitely my words for the day!

Galashields natives known in the Borders as "Pailmerks" as that town was the last to get a sewerage system & the folk bore the mark of a pail on their erses!  ;D
