Baptism Records - Queen Charlotte's Hospital
« on: Monday 16 May 16 22:27 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate the christening of my Great Grandfather, Eric Norman Batting. He was the illegitimate son of Nellie Eliza Batting and born 19th March 1914 in Queen Charlotte's Hospital. Nellie Eliza Batting was from Bledlow Ridge Buckinghamshire but had been working as a Domestic Servant at 32 Hartington Road, Ealing in 1911. His Prayer Book mentions his date of communion as 24th February 1929 by the vicar at St Pauls, Bledlow Ridge, however there is no record of him being christened at that church.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many baptisms were performed in Queen Charlotte's itself, before the mothers were discharged. These are recorded in the registers of St Mark, Old Marylebone Road. They are held at London Metropolitan Archives but are not online for this date. From the catalogue, the relevant register (June 1913 - July 1914) appears to be P89/MRK1/019 and is accessed on microfilm X095/766.

Thank you StevieSteve, that would be great. I believe the hospital admissions may be closed but it would be good to locate them in the admission book - I may have to pay LMA staff to do that.

May do, but still worth trying to access it first - they do have the ability to release items, even if the catalogue says it's closed. After all, it's unlikely that anyone's still alive from that record set.

StevieSteve,

These were the reference numbers the LMA gave me in 2013 but they said the records were not able to be consulted and that I would have to pay a fee for them to look it up as well as provide a death certificate (which I do not have a copy of).

H27/QC/B/01/015 - Register of in-patients, 1912-1914
H27/QC/B/01/016 - Register of in-patients, 1914-1915

I had a quick look on the catalogue and I think that the volumes are now available for public view.

I don't have my great grandfathers birth certificate but my great grandmother told me he was born there and he used to say he was a 'true Londoner' having been born within ear of the Bow Bells (despite living in Bledlow Ridge).

Yes, I expect there's a 100 year cutoff which applied back in 2013 but has now expired

Paddington isn't really within the sound of Bow bells but you won't hear it from me

Thank you so much for looking.

I think I will be ordering the birth certificate - maybe family information is wrong if Nellie Eliza Batting wasn't on the patient register.
