Unfortunately, doubt that a death at sea will carry details on his parents (at best a spouse's name) :-\

Doesn't help with the key outstanding info, but have you seen this entry for Alexander from the UK and Ireland, Masters and Mates Certificates:

Alexander Taylor, 39. Born on 19 March 1812 in Crail.
Issue Date: 24 Jan 1851
Issue Port: Anstruther (fits with the mention of property there for him in his inventory).
Certificate Number: 47.901

It is all very interesting and frustrating.    Is Alexander a bro of Jane/Jean and son of George and Crawford B???

Evidence points to the possibility:

2nd dau bapt Crawford Boyce - name of paternal Gmother???
James T witness to both marriage and birth of 1st child (named after maternal Gmother) is coal dealer as is Jane/Jeans brother.

Alexander died at sea as given in the Cupar wills and testaments and names his wife as Brown or Taylor.    There is no problem with Elisabeth and her side of the family.

George and Crawford had 5 children between 1792 and 1802 - all in OPR.    There is no sign of an Alexander being born.    1851 census has Alex, Elisabeth and Jane in Shoregate, Crail.    1861,  1871 Elisabeth (widow) and Crawford there.    Elisabeth dies 1877.   No trace 1841.

Alexander owned the Schooner "Julia" which was left to Elisabeth.

Do I therefore take it as read that Alexander is the son of George and Crawford Boyce or is the evidence too flimsy to be certain??????

Evidence is strong but just not confirmed.

I hadn't noted until now that the coal seller James was Jean's brother. Helps further with additional ties to this family of George and Crawford.

Monica

interesting that they have Alexander born about 1811, the mystery deepens.   Wonder where they got the info from.   I see it is dated 2000
