William Holt born c.1808 in Chinnor, Oxfordshire
« on: Tuesday 17 May 16 19:48 BST (UK) »
I a looking for a christening/the parents of William Holt born c.1808 in Chinnor, Oxfordshire. I think he may have listed his place of birth as Lewknor on some records. He was of Bledlow parish at the time of his marriage (and some Holt's there) but no obvious ones that link to William. He was living with his wife Harriet in Chinnor in 1841.

If anyone is able to help me locate him in baptism records I would be most grateful.

There is a William Holt, baptized 16 Aug 1807 @ Chinnor, to Edward & Susan Holt.

Sadly, he appears to be one of the very few who's actual d.o.b. does not appear on page 92,  in the OxFHS - Chinnor Transcripts.

Edward(x)Holt(sojourner), married Susannah(x)Eustace, 13 Oct 1802 @ Chinnor.  Witnesses - Joseph Rogers & Hannah Holt.

There is a burial for a William Holt, aged 49. 14 May 1855 @ Chinnor.

Also a burial for a Susannah Holt, aged 45.  19 July 1830.   Died 16 July.

No baptism in OxFHS Lewknor Transcripts,  around 1808 for a William Holt, but there is a baptism for Jane Holt, to a William & Jane. 12 June 1808 @ Lewknor. plus Heden Holt in 1813, to same parents.

Is this his marriage in 1829 @ Bledlow.

William Holt, of this parish, bachelor, and Harriet Barber of the parish of Saunderton in this County. Spinster.  by banns 23 Nov 1829 in presence of George Croxford, Rebecca Purslane, William Fryday.  (From the May Lanchbury web site).

Daughters of the above. ?
Mary Ann Holt was baptized at @ Chinnor, 6 Jan 1857. Born 17 Aug 1830.
Susannah Holt, was baptized @ Chinnor, 6 Apr 1855.  Born 28 Oct 1829.

Baptism from the Lanchbury site;

1778 - Feb 8th.  Paul & Edward twin sons of Simon & Sarah Holt.

Wow thank you so much.

This has to be the William I am looking for. I have his death as "before 1861" in my tree and while I can't find my copy of the census from 1861 for Harriet at the moment (the marriage you found in Bledlow) - that would have come from the census records.

Mary Ann Holt is the daughter of William and Harriet - I have her birth from Independent Chinnor records. I also have Susannah's birth and her christening (for some reason it must have been transcribed somewhere).

Are there any other children of Edward and Susannah?

Harriet Barber was born in Essex, I haven't checked if there are any other Barbers in Saunderton.

I guess I will need to try and find Edward (a death or census) to see if the Bledlow Edward is the right age.

I think Harriet Holt died in 1881 in Chinnor. Not sure if there is a burial record for her there.

Harriet Holt was buried 23 June 1881, aged 77.  So allowing 2-4 days, her date of death was circa 20th June.  Birth year c1804/5.

Her place of birth is somewhat obscure in the census, but I assume its' MALDON, Essex, but not sure about it.

I can only see one other baptism @ Chinnor.

John Holt- born 12 Sept 1803. Bap. 16 Oct 1803. Son of Edward & Susan.

Burial - John Holt, 2 July 1810, aged 7 years.

It may be worth contacting BucksFHS and OxFHS, for a burial search for Edward Holt.  If the age at burial fits with a birth year of c1778, he may be your man.

Thank you so much Steve,

I have her birth as Maldon, but the 1881 census transcription has Smaulding, which I assume is an error. I have not looked at the original image - she was a pauper at the time b.1804.

The Lanchbury site is worth a closer look for more Holt's.  It can be a bit of a trawl, but worth it.

http://lanchbury.id.au/genealogy/bledlow1500.html

Marriage @ Bledlow. 1765 - Oct. 21st.  Simon Holt & Sarah Lutman.  That fits with Edward Holt's parentage.

I have used it before, it's very helpful. I had looked for Holt's and saw that marriage. I just need to see if I can say that the Edward Holt is one and the same. The twin brother is buried as a child.

I know Susannah Eustace was born c.1785 but no results on websites when I did a quick search. Quite a few Eustace in Bledlow but no Susannah or variant.

I have a Thomas Holt(of Chinnor) in my tree, who married Elizabeth Buckingham in Princes Risborough, Bucks in 1792.  I have not investigated any further, as he and she are leaves on a twig on a branch. ;D

Let us know how you get on with Edward Holts burial/death search.

I have just emailed the OXFHS and just submitted a search via the BucksFHS website.

On Edward Holt, there is a death registered in the March Quarter of 1841 in Wycombe District which might be the right Edward (unless he died before then).
