Devon burial records
« on: Wednesday 18 May 16 12:16 BST (UK) »
Hello, my great grandfather George Long died 1 January 1915 at Babbacombe Torquay.
How I can find out where he was buried please?

Torquay Cemetery advise they have no record of him.

Thankyou, Marilyn Long

There are two churches in the Babbacombe area. You could try contacting them, as such a "recent" event might be in the current registers.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

There is only ONE church with a burial ground in the Babbacombe area and that is the parish Church of St Marychurch, All Saints church has never had a graveyard. I have indexed the burial registers for St Marychurch and George Long is NOT buried there. I've checked the Torquay Cemetery index compiled by Devon Family History Society and can confirm that there is not a George Long buried there in 1915,
There were no other burial grounds open in Torquay at that time. If he was cremated that would have to have been in Plymouth.
Of Course he could have specified where he was to be buried- his home town, his favourite place, literally anywhere.

Terry and pinefamily, thankyou very much for your help.

What organisation should I contact in Plymouth in case he was cremated?

I think they were recently in Devon from London - maybe due to the War - so his body could have been taken back to London.

cremation was still in its infancy in England just after WW1, Plymouth crematorium opened in 1934, Torquay opened mid 20th century.

If he was returned to London, where would he have gone (last known address) to be able to suggest burials places

Probate was granted 2 February 1915 to his wife Emily and a John Crabb. Estate valued at £12,000 plus, so quite well off. I would look for a will.

Peter
Allen, Brown, West - Berkshire
Caesar, Dicker, Lamden, West - Hampshire
Hicks, Martin, Masters - Kent, Middlesex
Hancox/Hancock/Hancocke - Warwickshire
Gardner - Devon
Traylen - Essex & Jersey

Thanks for clearing that up, Terry. When I looked up churches for Babbacombe, it did not specify whether they had burial grounds or not.
