Comcardan???
« on: Wednesday 18 May 16 13:17 BST (UK) »
I am hoping for some help with a census image from 1851.
It is for a Henry Turner, aged 23.
He is living in Llanvetherine(?) in Wales and working as a servant.

The birthplace is written as 'Wiltshire, Comcardan'.
But I cannot find this place anywhere.
Is it a mis-spelling or mis-pronounciation?
Is it a farm name?

Any Ideas?

Thanks,
Chris.
Adelaide, Australia.

The first three letters look like Cwm , that combination appear in other places of birth on the page.
Whilst a common Welsh sound, it does not suggest any Wiltshire Town!
Maybe a Welsh attempt at Castle Combe?

Or something else beginning Coombe, Combe, Coom, etc.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

I like the idea of somewhere starting with coombe, said in a Wiltshire accent it would sound much like cwm to a Welshman, also the first letter of the second half of the place could be lost in the accent,

So coombe Martin for example would sound like coomartin, and all the vowels are drawn out slowly

Same here.
And that site transcribes his pob as Cwmcarven, Monmouthshire.

Though the image looks like Wiltshire to me . . .

Thanks everyone. It certainly is a tricky one.
The person I'm looking for was from Monckton Deverill, so that's nothing like Cwmcordan.
Appreciate all the help.
Chris.
