Armstrongs at Mount Jerome Cemetery
« on: Thursday 19 May 16 01:48 BST (UK) »
Dear RootsChat Forum,

I am currently managing/researching the family archive of Martin John O’Dell Armstrong (Melbourne, Australia) whose great-great-grandparents are interred at the Mt. Jerome Cemetery, Dublin.

In 1908, a great uncle visited the cemetery and photographed the burial site showing a cluster of headstones. Unfortunately, the inscriptions are not clearly visible. Image attached.

Is it possible to have the information checked against any records and if still standing, from the headstone itself?

The couple are, Captain Thomas Armstrong (d.18.12.1847) and Harriot Armstrong (d.17.05.1858). Harriot of Ennis Co.

I have visited the Ireland Genealogy Projects website, amongst others, but was unsuccessful in finding any information.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Maria

I think Harriot would be from Co Clare, and that may be where the O'Dell comes from.  There were quite a few Odells (no apostrophe) around Limerick.

Oops - sorry - I see now that you've tried that link.

What information do you want checked?

Reports from 1827 confirm that Capt. Thomas Armstrong died at either Harcourt Street or Harrington Street depending on the newspaper, however all state it was within hours of his "second daughter Jane"

He left a widow, five sons and three daughters and his widow died in 1850 according to a court case reported in April 1873. "Lands were conveyed upon certain trusts in contemplation of the marriage of Thomas Armstrong and Harriett Armstrong" in 1801; this ties with marriage banns in Killaloe, Co. Clare and a connection to that county and Ennis

George Knox Armstrong (d Oct 10 1866 a bachelor) was the eldest son of the marriage and the court case was based around his management of the estate inherited on the death of his father and whether undue influence was made by certain parties to his decisions

Hello,

Thank-you for forwarding that information so promptly.

The information I would like checked/confirmed is what is inscribed on the tombstone.

Our Collection holds records confirming the death of Captain Thomas Armstrong - 18 December 1847 and his widow Harriot Armstrong - 17 May 1858, age 83, Dublin.

We have no/limited information about a number of their children though we do hold some court papers regarding the Armstrong v Armstrong case, which was dismissed in favour of George Knox Armstrong.

Regards
Maria

Hi Maria

There are several newspaper articles on line referring to the court case; one in the Dublin Daily Express of April 30 1873 refers to Thomas dying in "the year 1847, leaving his widow and five sons and three daughters surviving".  The plaintiffs in the case of Armstrong vs Armstrong were James H Armstrong and John S Armstrong; one or both were the son(s) of the next elder brother of George Knox Armstrong.

I will see if I can visit this weekend and if the Headstone is still intact and legible for you

I have taken a few photographs for you this morning

One from almost the same spot
The large house in the original is still there but without it's upper storey and roof; you can now see the full roof of the Victorian Chapel. In the original you can just see the left had gable and roof cross.

The Armstrong grave is the three headstones across the immediate front.

The one on the left seems to have no inscription

The centre one reads:
Capt. Thomas Armstrong
Royal Longford Militia
died 18/3(?) Dec 1847
aged 55 years
also
Harriott Armstrong
Departed this life
May 18 1858
aged ?5 years

The one on the right is very faint but an attempt at the inscription is:
?
James ?
?
and Thomas Armstrong
died 26 ? 1857
aged ? years
George Knox Armstrong
his eldest brother
Died ? 10 186?
aged ?

The cemetery staff may be able to help tell you if there are other family members in the grave
The photographs I have taken are better quality that what's posted due to maximum sizes allowed

Grave # is D81/1107 located off the Guinness Walk

Hello.

Thanks again for the images, transcripts and grave site number forwarded - much appreciated.

I'll be contacting the cemetery staff for further information as the website -
http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/dublin/photos/tombstones/mt-jerome-ndx.htm
doesn't seem to have the Armstrong's listed, yet.

Regards
Maria
