Laura Margaret Wilson where did you go after 1905, Dunedin?
« on: Thursday 19 May 16 11:44 BST (UK) »
Seeking any leads on Laura Margaret Wilson.  Can locate her on Electoral roll for Dunedin up to 1905 at 113 Athol Place, widow but cant find her thereafter.

Laura Margaret was born in Oxfordshire in 1862 to Rebecca Wilsdon.  Rebecca married William Charles Woolliams and they came to NZ with children from previous marriages, and from their marriage in 1873.   Laura Margaret is listed as Woolliams in the journey and subsequently.

Laura Margaret had 2 sons and a daughter, and then she married George or John George Wilson in Dunedin in 1890.   Laura Margaret and George had one son who died within days of birth.    George Wilson (husband) had an accident and was committed to Seacliff where he died in 1903.

I have searched NZ death and marriage records.  I have considered if she was buried with George but she wasnt.  Cant find any records that she left NZ (but this may be possible)

Appreciate any other suggestions or assistance.

thanks so much Janette - what put you onto this possibility?

I cant locate any marriage documents, or any details about Charles John for his death or birth in nz.. so will keep searching to see what i can find on him and think just based on the names and age I may have to just order the certificate and see what comes up as details about her on that.

The NZ BDM death registration shows that a Laura Margaret  WILSON (d. 1926) was "CKA" (commonly known as) surname ROLLS.

Hi

I wasn't able to find a marriage between Laura and Charles - and the "CKA" attached to her death registration is suggestive that she wasn't legally "Mrs. ROLLS" but that she used the surname of her partner, Charles ROLLS.

Will look further afield to see what can be found for "C.J. or Charles John ROLLS".

thanks I have found a Charles John Rolls as a Captain on familysearch arriving into NZ in 1901 and 1903, he is listed as Australian, aged about 39 so would make him a similar age to Laura Margaret.   There is also a Charles John Rolls buried in Sydney in 1935 aged 79 but that makes a 1856 birth so the two are not the same.

Appreciate the help - I had searched directly on bdm website and family search and ancestry, however hadnt tried findmypast which is where I have now seen there is a link to the CKA Rolls.  Lesson learnt to try all the possibles options.

The man "Charles ROLLS" known also as "Charles John ROLLS" (the said "husband" of Laura) ... appears to have been on NZ electoral rolls from 1911, where he is residing at "Browns" in the Awarua electorate.

In 1925 he is at "Woodend" (Awarua) ... on both those occasions he's listed as a labourer ???

Question is, is the "seafaring" Charles John ROLLS (early 1900's) the same man ???
