Greenham and Newbury Parish Register check
« on: Friday 20 May 16 16:24 BST (UK) »
Is anyone able to check for some burials and marriages in Greenham between 1800 and 1900?

Also can anyone check the details of the follow christening:

Hester Head - 9 July 1835 Newbury

I want to check who her parents are listed as. I have her in my tree as the daughter of Joseph and Jane Head, however they had another daughter named Esther who was christened in Greenham only 6 months earlier on 19 January 1835. Joseph and Jane had nine other children all born and christened in Greenham between 1818 and 1840 and I wonder if Hester is an error [could she be the daughter of a different Joseph - there were lots in Newbury]. Alternatively could Esther and Hester be the same child christened twice in both parishes if the parents moved? With the names being so similar could Esther have been misheard and mis-transcribed as Hester?

Many thanks

Matthew

Hi Matthew,

What marriages and burials are you looking for in particular?

Just in case you don't have these: (all buried at St Mary Greenham)

Jane Head
aged 63
buried 12th Oct 1859

Joseph Head
 aged 69
 buried 26th August 1864

and possibly two of their children

Benjamin Head
aged 7 months
buried 24th August 1834

William Head
 aged 3 buried
27th July 1824

Hi Chris

That looks like my ancestors, the dates sound about right. Many thanks or those. There are some others which I'm trying to trace but I will post those and approx dates of death later on.

Many thanks again

Matthew

Hi Chris

Can you double check the christening of Hester/Esther Head in Newbury in 1835 for me if possible? I still can't tell if there were two separate children or if this is simply the same person. Also can you check Newbury for the following:

Burials
Pheby Head after 1810 (she was married to Joseph Head who died 1811)

Marriages
Pheby Head (widow) 1811-1821
Benjamin Head c1829-1835
Thomas Head c1777-1799
William Head c1768-1779
Mary Ann Head c1776-1796

Can you also check for these christenings:

Ann Terry c1710-1729
Pheby Poor c1760-1779

In Greenham can you check for the following

Christenings
Mary Head c1817-1819
Elizabeth Head c1823
Joseph Head c1826
Maria Head c1826

The above were all children of Joseph and Jane Head

Thanks

Matt

Hi Matt,

Some of the info for you!

Re: baptism for Esther/Hester Head:

Place: St Nicolas Church Newbury
Date: 9th July 1835
Name:Hester Head
Parents: Joseph and Jane Head
Father's Occupation: Labourer
Abode: GREENHAM

Original parish record viewed for this entry at Newbury library

There is a ledger at Newbury library for the parish of Greenham but it only gives the name, date of baptism and the parents names,  the following is recorded in this ledger

Place; St Mary Greenham
Date: 19th Juk 1835************
Name: Esther Head
Parents: Joseph and Jane Head

*********** It looks like Juk should be July as the dates for the baptisms run:

7th June
5th Juk
19th
16th Aug

I wonder if the date 9th July 1835 recorded in the St Nicolas baptism record was a mistake and should have been the 19th July 1835 and that Esther/Hester is the same child but baptised for some reason in Newbury and then recorded in the Greenham parish register also.

Baptisms at St Mary Greenham for children of Joseph and Jane Head:

3rd May 1818 Mary Head

17th August 1823 Elizabeth Head

12 March 1826 Maria Head

I could not see a baptism for a Joseph Head in Greenham between 1823 and 1831

I could not see a marriage in St Nicolas Church Newbury for Pheby Head or Benjamin Head (between the dates given) but there was this one (just in case you don't already have it):

Place: St Nicolas Newbury
Date: 25th May 1817
Bride: Jane Virtue (spinster)
Groom: Joseph Head (Bachelor)
Witnesses: Charles Barnes and James Virtue
Both bride and groom maked with an X

Next time I go to the library I will try and look up the other requests for you (not sure when this will be though, could be a little while if you don't mind waiting.)

Chris

Hi Chris

Many thanks, that's fantastic. I had some of this info but not all the full baptism or burial dates (for some reason). Also I had the marriage of Joseph Head and Jane Virtue (my ancestors) but I don't think I had the names of the witnesses written down (James Virtue was either Jane's brother or her father).

No rush for the other info though.

Many thanks

Matt

Hi Matt,

Sorry but could not find a baptism for Phoebe Poor c1760-1779 at St Nicolas the only Poor baptisms were:

19/9/1762
Mary d of Thom?as and Christopher Poor (? indicates a smudge on the record)

and

30/11/1771
John s of Sarah and Thomas Poor

Could not find a remarriage for Phoebe Head after 1811

Also no luck with a baptism for Ann Terry c1710-1729

I will have a look for the marriages next time I go to the library.

Chris

Hi Matt,

Could only find one possible "marriage" from your list:

St Nicolas Church Newbury
Banns
Thomas (Head Hood or Read)
Elizabeth Sollaway

4th, 11th and 18th August 1793

With regard to Phoebe Poor just a thought but I was wondering if she might have been born Phoebe Nalder and that Thomas Poor might have been her step-father as the parish records show:

Marriage Banns:

16th, 23rd and 30th May 1762
Thomas Poor
Christian Lawrence

I think that this is the baptism of there child and that Christian has been mistakenly recorded as Christopher

19/9/1762
Mary d of Thom?as and Christopher Poor (? indicates a smudge on the record)

there is a burial for a Chriatian Poor, 30th May 1769

and then this marriage a few months later:

3rd September 1769
Thomas Poor (widower)
Sarah Nalder (spinster)
Both of this parish
Both marked with an x

then this baptism:

30/11/1771
John son of Sarah and Thomas Poor

If Thomas was widowed and had daugher Mary aged 7 to look after and Sarah Nalder was an unmarried mother this might explain the quick remarriage.

I could not find a baptism at St Nicolas for a Phoebe Nalder (child of Sarah Nalder) but wondered if it might be worth checking other parish records for a possible baptism of a Phoebe Nalder.

Chris
