records of possible illegitimate birth
« on: Saturday 21 May 16 07:30 BST (UK) »
I can't find a birth record for my gg grandmother, Annie Tait.  The first record is in the 1861 Greenock census as a newborn where has her father's surname though her parents would marry later.  Her mother was Catherine McPherson but I can't find a birth under that name either.  There is another Annie Tait born in Greenock around the same time but to different parents.  Any ideas of where to look next.  I have her marriage and death certs.

Thanks Kay.  I'd looked at this one previously, unfortunately, the mother has the wrong name.  sheena

It is possible she wasn't registered.  They may have opted to try and hide this as I see Mr. Tait was a Seaman so perhaps away while this eventual event blossomed.

There is an Ann McPherson registered 14 Jan 1862, illegitimate daughter of Mary McPherson.  Maybe this is the fix, then maybe not.  Do you know what day or month your GG Grandmother was born?

Hi All

There is this birth in November 1860 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ7N-8D4  A possibility if Annie was a name she later went by...rather than Cornelia?

I went looking for other births to a Catherine McPherson and I found cornelia (thanks Monica).  It seems the most likely because the child was born at Market Street, Catherine's on Market Street on the census (although the number is different).  Another interesting point is that the birth was registered by someone called McLaughlin (Catherine's mother was also a McLaughlin) could be a relation.  It's the best possibility so far.  If anyone has access to the 1861 census, I wonder if they would check (a) if there were two Catherine  McPhersons in the street and also if there is a neighbour called Isabella McLaughlin.

There is no marriage or death for anyone called Cornelia McPherson so perhaps that name did not continue.
