Happy Clarke
« on: Saturday 21 May 16 15:15 BST (UK) »
Hi!
Can anyone help with any of the following?

I have a Happy Clarke marrying a Joseph Gray on 13th October 1817 at Butley Suffolk? Happy may have had a son before the marriage:

George Clarke baptised 15th January 1815 Wantisden Suffolk.

On the census returns Joseph Gray is an Agricultural Labourer and Chelsea Pensioner? I believe he died at Woodbridge in 1857 and Happy died at Woodbridge in 1862.

If anyone can shed any light on their parentage I would be very grateful! :)

A family tree has parents for Joseph as William Gray 1755-1844 and Mary Cole 1765-1831.

1851 Census Happy is born c 1796 Butley and 1861 c 1795 Wantisden.

Maybe someone may have access to those Records.

I can only find 1 other Clarke born Butley who could be a Sibling of Happy;

William CLARK/e c 1810/1812 Butley

1841 Census
John COOPER, 75, Farmer
William CLARK, 25, Farmer
Eliz Clark, 22
Samuel Clark, 40, Cordwainer
All born in County

1851/1891 William is easy to find.

Also Happy may be a nickname for Hepzibah.

Trish :)

EDIT, 1851 Census Samuel CLARK is born c 1803 Butley so another possible Sibling

Baptismal record may be under the name Kerenhappuch, which is usually shortened to Happy.

Butley and Wantisden are only a mile apart. I had relatives farming and buried at Wantisden. It is a tiny place, right next to the old ASAF base at Bentwaters. In fact you have to park next to the perimeter fence to visit the church.
I have come across  several Keren-happuchs in my recent researches. It was quite commonly used by families who were very religious and many were dissenters. Keren-happuch, which means horn of antimony, was the youngest of the three beautiful daughters of Job, named in the Bible as given to him in the later part of his life, after God made him prosperous again. Antimony is a substance that used to be used as an early type of eye shadow.  A hollowed animal horn could have been used to store this material. Keren-happuch's older sisters were named Jemima and Keziah.

In 1855 White's Butley has 'a small Wesleyan chapel'.
No Independent chapel listed for Wantisden, but Wesleyan/Methodist chapels were on a 'circuit'.
I am not sure if Butley would have come under the Framlingham and Peasenhall circuit?
I have found I saved a reference that Framlingham and Peasenhall Wesleyan Methodist Circuit (Baptisms 1802-1835-Modern Transcript; Baptisms 1800-1853) have been transcribed - I forgot to make a note of where!!! I suspect they can be found at Dr William's Library in London.

Agree with Hookleg, Kerenhappuck women are usually from old testament religious families.
