Wynne/Steeple/Mathews of Gop, Trelawnyd
« on: Sunday 22 May 16 17:36 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for a connection between John Hughes of Llanfrwog, Ruthin (1661 -1738), a Mr Steeple of Holywell and the Wynne family of Gop Farm, Newmarket/Trelawnyd

I've found a letter to my g-gf from a Matthews-Hughes cousin which mentions a picture: "This picture belonged to the Wynnes of Gop in the co.y of Flint & came into my family about 1700 through my ancestor Mr Steeple of Holiwell my great-grand-mother's brother." He also says that his grandmother went to live at Gop after being widowed. This would be Elizabeth Mathews/Matthews of Plasy yn Llysfaen who married Robert Hughes (grandson of the above John Hughes) in 1813.

Elizabeth's father was John Mathews of Plas yn Llysfaen, 'previously of Newmarket.' There is a marriage of a John Mathews to Elizabeth Davies on 11th July 1785 in Trelawnyd, and this couple have a daughter, Elizabeth, born 6th November 1786 in Trelawnyd (thanks to member taidgazacaz for the info).

Does anyone know of any Wynne-Steeple-Matthews connections? I can't get the Steeples of Holywell to fit at the moment...

There is a marriage bond of 1752 for a John Davies of Newmarket to Mary Steeples of Holywell, but I have no idea at the moment if it is relevant.

Hello Roger!

Yes, I've been looking at that too - wrong time frame, but...

The comparison of two wills show this connection,I think

John Davies of Gop refers to his sons John,William and daughter Elizabeth Mat(t)hews

Henry Steeple of Holywell(1788) refers amongst many others to nephews John and William Davies and niece Elizabeth Mat(t)hews.

Presumably this means John Davies of Gop married a sister of Henry Steeple.

Roger

Presumably this probably means Mary Steeple(s) was the sister of Henry and the Elizabeth Mat(t)hews was the mother(nee Davies) of the Elizabeth who married Robert Hughes.

Roger

That makes perfect sense. Now I'm wondering if the mysterious Steeple who married John Hughes of Llanfwrog/Ruthin is part of this, or in fact a Steeple at all. Or if Thomas Hughes married his cousin.

Many thanks!
