        As well as the sources JenB has given you could also try the records of Brooms RC church which, at the period you refer to, was one of the few Catholic churches in the area and which, together with Brooms School, had quite a large catchment area as a result. The church is still there but the school no longer.

         I had to take some shots of Ushaw College in 2007 for our local Family History group, and just for my own satisfaction I took multiple shots of the exterior of the College and combined them into the attached panorama.  :)

thanks for that idea.
 I would have thought it would be quite a trek to Brooms from Ushaw moor in the lat 1880s but it is worth a try.
I liked the panoramic photograph :)

 Brooms was the only other one I could think of, although as you say, a bit of a trek.
