Buckinghamshire Family History Society June Meeting At Aylesbury
« on: Sunday 22 May 16 18:39 BST (UK) »
Fraud, Forgery, Feuding

Gwyneth Wilkie's talk evolved from following up some of the evidence submitted in 1833 to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Parochial Registration. It looks at the difficulties experienced before Civil Registration was introduced in proving age, identity, lineage and entitlement - and the opportunities for false claims which arose!

Gwyneth examines the factors which were driving and obstructing change and what happened when Civil Registration was introduced. She'll also explain how an understanding of the way in which the data was recorded, transmitted and indexed can help resolve problems with the GRO Index. Finally, she'll look briefly at whether the new system banished fraud – or not.
