William James DAWES - Tasmania

Hi, could this chap have a clean up please and also I would like an opinion on the date of the uniform.

William was born 1879 and I'm not convinced it's him.  It's obviously a staged photo that is maybe purporting to be either Boer War or WW1??

Can't help with dating the uniform, but is that the date of the photo at the bottom left? Looks like Jan uary 13th 1909??

Post 1908 uniform.Not sure when this was rolled out in Tasmania.Breeches indicate a mounted Regt.
Could be a full or part timer.
The number may be his service no. or negative no.

Thank you all for participating.  And thanks Jim for your dating opinion. If he served in WW1, which I am now assuming he may have done from the picture, I can't find his service records.  That's the reason I'm not sure it's him.

If you've got access to the Tasmanian/Australian service records you could try just putting in the number that appears on the left & see what that throws up.

Born in 1879 - he'd have been 35 at the outbreak of WW2. That's quite old unless you in the regular army isn't it?    So maybe he was in the regular army for a while well before the was.

He looks younger than 35 in the photo do you think?

Sorry I can't make a link, but Google Australian Army Reserves and there is some info and a photo or some Tasmanian Reservists in1910.

The problem is solved, he is in fact Walter Dawes from Iona in Victoria posing in 1915 prior to embarkation.  What you said Jim got me looking more closely and in the bottom left corner is the address www.awm.com.au which led me to his picture on the War Memorial site.  See attachment.
