Appleyard Birth, Wicklow about 1794
« on: Monday 23 May 16 11:41 BST (UK) »
My 3x great grandfather, James Appleyard, was born in Wicklow in 1794. How can I find details of his baptism? No success so far.

Hi,
The earliest Wicklow Appleyard I found was in 1776, a John in a place called Grange.
The next earliest was a marriage in County Limerick in 1779.
In the Tithe records there was 1 Appleyard in Ireland in Killeedy County Limerick this was in in 1832.
The Only James Appleyard was born in 1834 in Cork, this is the only one in 3 sites.
You may struggle with this as it's early.
By 1900 there were about 12 "Appleyard" altogether, in the Dublin area.

Thank you for your response.
There was also a Thomas Appleyard born about 1800 at Tullamore. I've posted another request for this one. James and Thomas were probably brothers. They served alongside each other in the 18th. Dragoons and later in the 10th. Hussars. Maybe their births were recorded in the army chaplains returns.

There appears to be a James Appleyard baptised in Wicklow parish in December 1802, might this be him?

Thank you for your help, bandc.
The entry for Dec 1802 appears to be for a John Appleyard, (Jno Appleyard) although I may have mis-read this. The date doesn't concern me too much as a child born in 1794 could well have had their baptism delayed for a number of reasons. But it's good to have found another Appleyard. Thank you.

Yes perhaps it is Jno for john, I had first took it as Jas for James, have had another look at the register, and think it might be either but perhaps leaning more towards John.
The two entries above this entry do have Jas for James, and while the Appleyard entry does not match these there are some similarities, and while it does not match the Jno entries either  it does look quite like it , but I am no handwriting expert.

Thank you to everybody who has taken the trouble to do the look-ups for me.
I should have mentioned that James Appleyard was still alive in 1838 and the last mention I have of Thomas is when he was discharged from the !0th Hussars in 1831. This would have narrowed the searches. I'm still hopeful though!
