James Sharp / Churchman
« on: Monday 23 May 16 12:47 BST (UK) »
I have found a baptism for James Churchman 12 November 1786 - at Blatherwycke, Northamptonshire.
Father Thomas Churchman and mother Mary Sharp.
James's 1786 baptism record at Blatherwyke (found on the Free REG website) states - under the parents' names - "abode - Wing RUT" (i.e. county of Rutland).
Blatherwycke C of E gives
12 Nov 1786
James SHARP /CHURCHMAN s of Thomas Churchman & Mary Sharp of
the parish of Wing, Rutland
It appears that James was illegitimate.
I am wondering if anyone with access is able to see if Mary Sharp appears in any Bastardy records or Removal Orders.  I am in Australia and trying to trace the birth of a James Sharp in Lincolnshire born about that time.

Children Baptised St James, Freiston; to James and Ann Sharp/e
PRISCILLA, 15 Nov 1807
AQUILA, 19 March 1809
APOLLOS, 9 Sept 1810, Buried 05 Sep 1819 age 7 (should be 8?)
ALEXDR, 12 Jul 1812
JOHN RAISON, 10 Oct 1813, Buried 14 Oct 1813

1st Ann was Buried same Church 19 Nov 1816 age 39

I was hoping the Raison in John Raison Sharps name would hold a clue.
Only Marriage I can find  is Sabra Sharp to John Rason 26 Oct 1784 Butterwick
She seems to have been born 1750 to JAMES/SARAH

So not much help there.

Thank you both.

Yes I am getting desperate.  Perhaps I should just give up.

It is a difficult one sharpray.

FreeREG has these Baptisms Lincs;
All for JAMES Sharp;
30 June 1782 Sibsey to Richd/Mary
19 March 1786 Habrorough to William/Ann, Buried 4 June 1786 (so not yours)
12 Oct 1787 Crowland to Tobias/Elizabeth
24 April 1791 Freiston to James/Mary, Buried 17 June 1791 (so not yours)
Under Sharpe;
29 March 1790 Fulbeck to Wm/Leticia

It may be a good idea to follow those that lived on Census to try and eliminate them.

There are several Sharp Baptisms in Butterwick on there but no James

Thanks Trish.

I have found my James on every Census until his death.
With his various children by two wives.
I have tracked every James baptised in Lincolnshire anywhere near his claimed birth date of 1788 as given in the census returns.

I am convinced that he either was not baptised, was baptised in another County, or born under another name and adopted. I have traced most of the James Sharp/Sharpe's in other counties.
I have failed to find any record for a James Churchman such as marriage etc, I have failed to find any definite event for this James Sharp.

The counties aren't far from Lincolnshire and I still have a funny feeling about the Parish name.

I know I am clutching at straws but I have checked most possibilities. The biblical names of his children could mean he was a nonconformist or raised by a religious person. He did have involvement at the Freiston Church. For the period he was very literate, signing marriage records and was a Registrar at one time signing death certificates including that of one of his own children.

I have searched thoroughly.

Thank you for your time.
