I wonder if he married Lavinia, they broke up and he remarried then died.

As divorce was uncommon then, perhaps his second marriage was bigamous? Mind you, if the marriage in the first post is correct, so was that of Lavinia to James!

WHat am I missing here?

Lavinia Penny married Alfred Thorne (a different Thorne to the Alfred James Thorne that a Mary someone marries) in 1872

He died

She remarries to James Fiander in 1883

She appears as Jane on a census - either she calls herself Jane sometimes or Lavinia somehow got changed to Jane when the enumerator wrote up the schedule.

Is it more complicated than that?

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

I think there's a discrepancy between Alfred Thorne's name on the 1871 census (listed as Alfred J Thorne) and what's recorded on the BMD register; the only birth that can fit his age in 1871 is Alfred Thorne (without the J) registered in 1852 in Wincanton.

There doesn't seem to be a death registered in his name in the time period I'm looking at either.

It's annoying that the two marriage registrations have different variations of Alfred/Alfred James too.

I don't really know what to think now!! Thank you for all your help, as ever!

I think the best thing would be to get the birth certificate of one of the children as that would give you her maiden name and hopefully her married name if she was previously married.

I agree with groom a Childs Birth Cert is the best option to figure this one out ;)
