Bethnal Green
« on: Sunday 29 May 16 01:56 BST (UK) »
I will be visiting UK in July and have been unable, thus far, to find an historical society link to the Bethnal Green area.  In the mid 1800's my great grandmother, Eliza GATES,  was born in New Nichol St Bethnal Green and while I can find a map of the area around that time little else is presenting itself.
I would appreciate any links that I could tap into so I can expand on my visit to the area.

Kind regards,
Cheryl

Hi Cheryl.
Have you seen this web site? Hidden London. There is a search facility and I think some info about tours?
This is the page for Bethnal Green
http://hidden-london.com/gazetteer/bethnal-green/
This is the "Guide" page
http://hidden-london.com/the-guide/

Another web site is eastlondonhistory
This is a page for Bethnal Green
http://www.eastlondonhistory.co.uk/visit-bethnal-green-east-london/

It might be worth looking on Facebook for Bethnal Green pages too

The Charles Booth site will be useful since Nicoll street is one of the streets he surveyed in his survey into life and labour in London and covers 1886 - 1903
http://booth.lse.ac.uk/

You can see maps relating to notebooks with modern comaprisons e'g:
http://booth.lse.ac.uk/cgi-bin/do.pl?sub=search_catalogue_pages&arg0=nicol&arg1=and

You can see digitized notebook entries for named streets (enter in search box) e.g:
http://booth.lse.ac.uk/cgi-bin/do.pl?sub=display_page_check&args=b352,51

You might be lucky enough to find your family named in the notebooks

Bethnal Green is covered by the East of London Family History Society ...

Tower Hamlets History On Line is also very useful ...

A book called A Child of the Jago by Arthur Morrison gives an account of this area.
