Britain/Bates in Haynes
« on: Monday 30 May 16 08:00 BST (UK) »
Dear all,
Can anyone help me out here? I have a marriage in 1802 between Egram Britain (spelling varies a lot on first as well as last name) and Jane Bates, in Haynes. Now, I already know who Egram Britain and his parents are, but somehow I can't seem to find out who Jane's parents were.
According to the 1841 census she was slightly older than Egram, so could she be the Jane baptised in Northill in 1776, to Thomas and Jane Bates? Unfortunately she dies shortly after the census, so I can't trace her to 1851, when birthplaces are more accurately recorded.
Thanks for any tips!
Regards,
Lexi.

BURIAL;
Jane BRITTAIN, 31 Aug 1841, St Mary, Haynes
Age 67
(Birth c 1774)
(Source FreeREG)

I did notice on 1802 Marriage Egram is noted as a Bachelor and Janes marital status is not noted.

They Baptised St Mary;
ANN, 2 June 1805
JOHN, 1 Nov 1807
SALLY, 5 May 1810
JOSEPH, 28 July 1811
ELIZABETH, 4 April 1813
(FreeREG)

As you say the only 1 I can find in Beds c 1774/6 is to Thomas/Jane

So no Thomas or Francis Baptised to them which you would think there would be as Egrams Father was Francis.

There is a Jane Bates Baptised 03 Jul 1768, St Mary, Woooton, Beds, Mother JANE Bates
She would be 34 at 1802 Marriage and 45 when last Child born if her.

Thanks for that Trish!

No Thomas or Francis indeed, but hey, who knows, Egram might have hated his dad?  ;)

I found another child for them in 1803, Jane, baptised in Old Warden. That town keeps coming up in research on the Bates family, and the Thomas & Jane Bates that I guess are her parents actually seem to move to Old Warden halfway through their list of children.

The baptism date for Jane who is daughter of Thomas and Jane actually also fits the 1841 census info better.

I'll go with them for now  :)

Trish, do you think there might also be the option of Jane having been a widow when she married in 1802? Because in that case Bates wouldn't be her maiden name but the name of the husband who died.

Yes I explored the option of Jane being Widowed but only on FreeREG. Maybe you should try Familysearch..

Have tried ancestry, nothing so far. Will try familysearch as well, but consider the chances slim that they have more.

But that newspaper article, eh? Suicide by hanging? That's one for the books!
