So no Thomas or Francis Baptised to them which you would think there would be as Egrams Father was Francis.

It seems that Egram's father died when he was still a teenager. So he may have been closer to an uncle than to his father?

Trish, do you think there might also be the option of Jane having been a widow when she married in 1802? Because in that case Bates wouldn't be her maiden name but the name of the husband who died.

There must always be that possibility, but I can't see a marriage of Bates to Jane in Beds 1787-1802, nor a baptism of a Bates with a mother Jane in Beds in the same time frame (per IGI).

Bedfordshire Archives and Records Service (BARS, where JohnP-Beds is often to be found) has a settlement certificate from Old Warden to Northill dated 1770 for Thomas and Jane Bates - http://bedsarchivescat.bedford.gov.uk/Details/archive/110176656

Old Warden adjoins Haynes.

Yes I explored the option of Jane being Widowed but only on FreeREG. Maybe you should try Familysearch..

Have tried ancestry, nothing so far. Will try familysearch as well, but consider the chances slim that they have more.

Familysearch has much, much, more than Ancestry when it comes to baptisms and marriages pre 1837 in  Beds.

Virtually all pre 1813 baptisms and marriages in Bedfordshire have been extracted onto familysearch.

Yes she seems to be the most likely candidate  :)

Northill, Old Warden and Haynes are rather close together, right?

As I put in post #11, Haynes adjoins Old Warden. And on the other side of the parish Old Warden adjoins Northill.

By the way, what's with the Haynes/Hawnes spelling? I thought Hawnes was just a spelling error of some transcriber but if it's in the newspaper also...? I do assume it's the same place?
