SWITZERLAND Locarno grave records
« on: Tuesday 31 May 16 14:57 BST (UK) »
Hello
I wonder if anyone can tell me where to start on finding the grave of Blanche Herbert who died 12 December 1920 at the Hotel Belvedere, Locarno?  She was born in Ireland, lived in England and travelled a few times to Switzerland.  Thanks.

Maybe her will states where she wants to be buried  :-\

Hello
I have only seen probate details of her will.  She died without close living relations and no trace of burial in England or Ireland. But I have just read that graves in Switzerland are only rented for 25 years because of land shortage and then the plot is reused.  So maybe it is a hopeless chase.

It is correct that Swiss graves exist for 25 years before being "recycled". A visit to a Swiss cemetary is quite strange to those used to UK (and elsewhere) where old graves are the norm.

One other avenue could be a reference in the newspapers. I had a quick search of the Scriptorium online Swiss newspaper archive (on the University of Lausanne website) but nothing obvious, even though it came up with other "herbert" references in Dec & Jan 1920/1.
You may wish to try for yourself at scriptorium.bcu-lausaunne.ch
Also British ones for this period, especially where she lived in the UK.

Hi

I think if there was something written about her death in a Swiss Newspaper
you must search for it in the Newspapers of the Canton Tessin/Ticino.

I once researched the graves on the Anglican Cemetery near Lucerne (there are still existing graves of the 1920ies) and I found some newspaper articles about the death of some persons buried there at Welsh Newspaper Archives. So maybe you will find something in English or Irish Newspapers.

Thank you pb-devon and Svenja for those.  I have already searched English papers without any success.  I can find nothing apart from probate details.  She is not a relative but the daughter of an Irish family that interests me.
I found a little in scriptorium.bcu-lausanne.ch re Mary Balfour Herbert, her mother, but no mention can I find of Blanche.  Thank you both :)  My hope was in finding a gravestone until I learned of the Swiss custom.  She had no close family so there would be no one to maintain the grave maybe.
