History of Braade Upper (Braide Upper) Glencolmbkille and Curran Family
« on: Wednesday 01 June 16 04:16 BST (UK) »
Hello, Im interested in learning about the history of Braade Upper sometimes spelled Braide Upper near Glencolmbkille. From what I understand it is currently uninhabited. Im a descendent of the Curran's who once lived in house 6 according to the 1901/1911 census. I believe it was a poor area up in the mountains.

Here it is in the OSI 6" mapping series (c.1830s), if you use the 'overlay' slide to the right, it will overlay a  modern map, by cross checking against Google maps (I found it searching for 'Braade Upper Donegal') you will see that there are buildings in the same location today (just north of the R230 - they don't look uninhabited in 'streetview') as those that appeared in the 1830s map:

Thank you very much for that link. I was completely unaware of that site. I was able to find Braade Upper. It was just a bit to the east.

According to this site, http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1027,  Catholic Church records for Glencolmbkille are held in local custody.  Is anyone aware of a online record or research that might have this information?

This seems to be what that site is referring to
https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&query=%2Bfilm_number%3A1279235%20%2Bavailability%3A%22Family%20History%20Library%22

Not searchable, seems to be this film ordering thingy people talk about.

Hello, I found the website, IRISH GENEALOGY to be be very good. Use GLENTIES as the registration district when making your searches. It's not a complete record since I have been unable to locate two family members that I know were born in Braade Upper in 1907 and 1913, however I did find registrations of birth, marriage and death documents of other relatives. Some of whom were from my great grandparents generation. I can now identify not only Currans but also direct links to McGonagles of Meenadreen, McGinlys of Meenacross and McGintys of a so far unknown townland.
