Susana Evers married and died in Chunar, but born???
« on: Wednesday 01 June 16 11:13 BST (UK) »
I have a record of Susana (susanna) Evers born 1827 marrying John McDonald in 1948 he was a conductor (railway) and am wondering if there is a data base that my help.
She remarried 1861 to John Courtney and died in 1864. Both her marriages were in Chunar.
I can not seem to find a record of her birth on ancestry or fibis or any record of her arriving in India. Any help as to where else to look would be great. Thank you

Hi nomie

Have you got a copy of her 1848 marriage certificate or are you looking at indexes?

I ask because the 1848 marriage shows she was a widow but her father is not named, just shown as a Native Christian.

There is a previous marriage in 1844 at Chunar of Patrick Evers a widower aged 53  :o to Susannah Hamilton aged 17  :o but again her father isn't named.

Patrick Evers aged 50 ? died in Chunar and was buried 4th August 1846

This maybe the end of the line for you.

I was just looking at indexes, so just the dates.
What does native christian mean I wonder? Thank you I will look at the other names.
Blimey that is rather a HUGE age gap!

It usually means that the person would have been of Indian ethnicity instead of British Empire or European but had been brought up a Christian denomination, Anglican or Catholic or even Baptist, Methodist.

(the child would be known as half-caste or mixed race)

I've seen baptism entries when Native Woman is entered alongside the child's mother's name.

I think in this case there is no doubt that Susannah was illegitimate, proving her parentage may be impossible.

Poor thing, married twice more to men at least 20 years older then died at 37.
I shall look for Mrs Hamiltons around at the time and at orphanages in the area (not sure if there were  any) as someone must have raised her.
But you may be right could be the end of the line

There is a tree on ancestry with these people - is it yours?  On it, it has Susanna dying in Allahabad, 2 Aug 1898.  It also gives her parents names as E. Hamilton, surgeon and Margaret.

Hello, no that is not mine I found the same tree earlier.
The death on the tree you have found is of her third husbands, third wife ( he remarried after susana died). I also can not find any links anywhere to connect her to those parents and there is lots of documentation with their other child.
The wedding certificate found in another reply on here has as her father a native christian, so that seems to fit more.
All the husbands worked for the railways and I know she lived with her third husband (Her third husbands family was documented, and she is mentioned) at the east India company colony in Chunar so hope its not totally a lost course.
But thank you for the reply

Hi, I'm very interested in this thread as my GGG Grandfather was a John Courtney who married a widow at Chunar  called Susan Macdonald. She died in 1864 after the birth of her second child. I know this from notes made by her son in 1936. I've seen similar links to Evers  and Hamilton on Ancestry but I would like more proof of this connection. It would be great to find John and Susan's marriage certificate. I'd love to hear from anyone who has suggestions for proving the link. Thanks, Helen.
