The tree on Ancestry suggests Mr Hamilton was with the 54th.

This entry may be relevant:

"At Cannanore, the lady of Surgeon Hamilton, 54th foot, of a son"

The military record of Charles Hamilton, Surgeon of the 54th Foot can be downloaded for free from the National Archives:

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C13323824

It's a large file (800+ pages) and you will need to scroll through it to find the relevant person.

EDIT: Record 392.  Born 1797, Moneymore, Ireland.  Married to Margaret Patterson in 1825 in Ireland.  Two children, Isabella 1828 (matches Ancestry tree) and Robert C 1830 (matches British Library record I posted above), both Cannanore.

Asst Surgeon in 72nd Foot 1809, Surgeon 54th Foot 1820.  On sick leave in England June 1825 to March 1826.

No mention of Susannah.

Thank you very much for that. In my GG grandfather's notes it says his father John Courtney retired to Chunar in 1861 or 1862. He married Susan Macdonald - the widow of a conductor. They had two children... in 1862 and 1864. Susan then died after childbirth. It also says she had no other children by her previous marriage. Do you know if there are any records of Chunar residents? Also, if Mr Macdonald was a conductor, can I assume he was a civilian rather than in the military? Thanks.
