SPEECHLEY/COLES Marriage

Folks,
George Speechley and Lucy Coles baptise Judith Elizabeth Speechley in Yaxley in 1832,by 1834 George marries Sarah Dent and has a further eight children.I have not been able to find a marriage to Lucy nor her death.Judith,my great grandmother, uses the surname Coles and marries in 1854 before moving to Australia.
Any help appreciated.

There's no such marriage on Hunts Marriage Index. Have you checked Judith's baptism entry to see if she might have been illegitimate as she used her mother's maiden name?

Her baptism shows both parent's names.Might have to expand search area.

That in itself is unusual, unless all other baptisms at around that time also show the mother's full maiden name. I think she was probably illegitimate and her mother either died as Lucy Coles or married someone else.

Lucy COLE/John SMITH, 20 March 1833, Bluntisham Cum Earith, Huntingdon

1841 Census in Bedfordshire;
John Smith, 30, Ag Lab
Lucy Smith, 30
Maria Smith, 6
James Smith, 4
Charles Wright, 20
Only John is born in County

1851 Lucy Smith is born c 1808 Gt Staughton, Huntingdonshire, England

I looked for Speechley Baptisms 10yrs either side of Judith Elizabeth.

The only other one with a Mothers maiden name noted was illegitimate;
William Nightingale Speechley SPEECHLEY, 03 Aug 1823 St Peyter, Yaxley, to William Speechley/Mary Nightingale
Base born. William Speechley reputed father.

Illegitimacy seems to be the likely situation.I have other couples who have baptised children in neighbouring parishes to avoid scrutiny but these two seem to have copped it on the chin.
