Elusive North Yorkshire ancestor
« on: Saturday 04 June 16 00:24 BST (UK) »
My ancestor, Thomas Coldwell, is in the 1841 census, living with his wife, Jane (née Smith), in Kelfield, Stillingfleet, Yorkshire.

He appears to die in Sep 1845, although as yet I do not have the cert.

Problem is I do not know where he comes from. Does anyone have an idea or even a strategy to work this out?

Many thanks!

Hi

The marriage transcript says he was from Stillingfleet, Jane from Bubwith. From the census he was born c1776 and in the county.

There is this one in the Brayton parish records, which is only 12 miles from Stillingfleet

Thomas Colwell bpt. 22 Apr 1775 son of John

This John Colwell had another child in Brayton, a daughter Mary. She was the third daughter, but Mary and Thomas were the only two I can see in Brayton. Here is her record, I've added it because of the amount of info in the record.

Mary born 26 April 1782 and bpt. 28 April 1782 dau. of John and Ann Colwell.

Mary Colwell third daughter of John Colwell of Barlow in this parish , labourer, son of Joseph Colwell of Birkin, farmer and Ann his wife, daughter of Henry Allisson, blacksmith of Leadstone.

Ann daughter of Thomas Richardson of Barlow in this parish blacksmith and Mary his wife daughter of John Roads of Goold in the parish of Swinfleet, farmer.

That's incredible!

What's your source: is it Ancestry or FamilySearch?

It's fabulous. And I think burial for John in 1800 (b. 1738)?

I used to subscribe but let it go as the tree function was not working.

Can you supply?

And let me know whether that function works again?

Hi scatchardfamily

I haven't got a tree on FindMyPast I just took advantage of the £1 offer  ;D, but I have to say I do like the site and everything seems to work ok for me.

Here are some more records

John COWLWELL of Barlow in this parish labourer was buried 23rd December 1800 in Brayton Churchyard aged 62.

***************
Think this is possibly his wife's burial in St Mary's Churchyard, Selby ( Brayton being a parish within Selby)

Ann COLWELL of Selby buried 17th August 1785 Selby churchyard, aged 40, died of consumption.

her baptism: Ann daughter of Thomas Richardson of Barlow bpt. 7 June 1741 Brayton.
