The Cake Mill in Grimsby 1911 ish
« on: Sunday 05 June 16 14:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,  I have found a relative on the 1911 census working as a labourer at the 'Cake Mill' in Grimsby.  Can anyone tell me where this was and if it was, as it sounds, somewhere where cakes were made, or if a Cake Mill was something entirely different.

Thank you,

Diana

It would be a mill where "cattle cake" was produced.  I think the cake was a by-product after the oil had been removed from seeds.

This one was at Gloucester, but you get the idea :) http://www.gloucesterdocks.me.uk/gloucester/warehouses/fosterbrosmill.htm
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Thanks Geoff. I had a feeling it wasn't going to be 'cakkes' as we know them!
Best wishes Diana

On the north side of East Marsh Street, Grimsby, between Holles Street and the railway, once stood Sowerby's Oil Mill a large steam powered oil mill complex which produced a range of animal feedstuffs and cattle food.  The Sowerby Mill was demolished in the late 1960s.

This is more than likely the "cake mill" he was working at

Thank you very much for that information...very interesting.  The area where Sowerby's was situated, is just near where my relative lived, so I am thinking that you are right.

Thank you for sharing that,

Diana
